大学の時、先生から中国最初の油田「大慶油田」の話を聞いたことがある。中国が大慶油田発見のニュースを公表していなかったにもかかわらず、日本企業はなぜかその情報を手に入れ、大慶油田の採掘に適した石油設備を生産し、そして、中国が世界中に採掘設備を求めた時に、日本企業が当然のように落札をしたという話である。
　日本企業はどのようにして、大慶油田発見の情報を手に入れたのだろうか。実は1964年に、油田採掘機のレバーを握った王進喜さんという「鉄人の精神」を持つ労働者が、雑誌『中国画報』のカバーを飾ったことがある。日本の情報専門家はまずこの写真から、中国では油田が発見されたに違いないと判断した。それから、写真の王さんの厚い綿入りの着物から油田の位置はチチハルとハルビンの間だと推測した。さらに、王さんが握っていた採掘機のレバーから油田の直径まで推測し、この油田に適した設備の生産に踏み切った。こうして、日本人の「恐ろしい」洞察力と意志が彼らに大きな商機をもたらしたのである。
