與那覇　本書でも書きましたが、それはもう戦国時代ですね（笑）。今も昔も戦国時代ファンは多いですが、多くの人が思っているような時代ではありません。どうしてあれだけ戦争をしていたか。それは食べ物がないから、食糧の奪い合いだったわけです。先ほども述べたように江戸時代初期の新田開発までは、稲作が完全には普及していないので、毎年、慢性的な大飢饉状態が続いていたのが戦国時代です。

――まさに生存競争を繰り広げていたと。

與那覇　そうです。ドラマなどでは武将たちが高邁なビジョンを掲げ、それを競い合うカッコいい合戦の様子が描かれていますが、実情は、飢える寸前で、血みどろで食べ物の取り合いをしているのが戦国時代です。大河ドラマなんかよりも、たとえばアフリカの内戦のドキュメンタリーとかを見た方が、「本当の戦国時代」に近づけると思いますよ。逆にいうと、それを克服して生まれた秩序だったから、日本人はいつまでも「江戸化」を諦めきれない。
